$10,500 earmarked for annual SAJA scholarships for high school, college and graduate students in 2010. Deadline for entries is Wednesday March 10, 2010.

Entries now open for annual awards honoring excellence in coverage of South Asia & outstanding reporting by South Asian journalists and students in the United States and Canada. Categories include outstanding reporting on South Asia in news, business, culture & commentary, the SAJA Daniel Pearl Award for Outstanding Reporting on South Asia, and one-time category Outstanding coverage of the conflict in Sri Lanka.

New York Times video journalist Jigar Mehta elected president, Dow Jones credit markets reporter Anusha Shrivastava chosen as vice president.

Fellows will soon begin work on stories in Nepal, Pakistan, India and Afghanistan.

SAJA members re-elected three incumbents and added two newcomers to form SAJA's 2010-2011 board, in an election where nine candidates vied for five open seats.

The SAJA annual meeting and election will be held December 8 in NYC. The candidates are (in alphabetical order) Arun A. Aguiar, Ambreen Ali, Sovy Azhath, Dipka Bhambhani, Sandeep Junnarkar, John Laxmi, Ismat Sarah Mangla, Anusha Shrivastava and Tejinder Singh. The South Asian Journalists Association will hold an election for five board seats this year. Those wanting to run for a seat need to send in a candidate statement to sajamember [at] gmail [dot] com by November 9.

SAJA is pleased to announce that the application process for its 2010 SRFs is open and the application deadline has been extended to Dec. 14, 2009.
