  Testimonials From Last Year's Recipients

The SAJA scholarship provided me with a greater sense of confidence in my journalistic ability. The scholarship gave me the opportunity to attend the SAJA convention, where I was able to meet others who are passionate about South Asia. Having an organization that stands behind you and believes that you're a promising member of the journalistic fraternity made me want to deliver on that promise. Since receiving the scholarship, I have served as the chair of the Columbia University chapter of SAJA and continue to report on issues relevant to South Asia and the diaspora.

Sumit Galhotra, 2011 SAJA Graduate Scholarship Recipient

I became a member of the South Asian Journalists Association as a high school student, when I stumbled upon the annual convention on a visit to New York. It was a community that welcomed me and encouraged me to pursue a field I had interest in. Now, more than three years later, I'm proud to say I'm fully committed to continuing my work as a journalist, and the SAJA scholarship provided the same support and a positive nudge. I continue to hear about the volatility of my medium, print journalism, yet there is a group of people who want to help me succeed, and I am incredibly appreciative of that.

Sonali Kholi, 2011 SAJA Undergraduate Scholarship Recipient

SAJA helped put me into college, plain and simple. Over the last few months, I’ve been able to engage myself in classes that further aid me in investigating current and past, worldwide and local, issues that I care about. I have also been given the opportunity to engage myself in local and international newsletters. The SAJA scholarship experience showed me a plethora of examples of other passionate South Asians that have built themselves up with their passion, hard work, and networking abilities. I would love to follow my ambitions with the same type of fire as shown to me by SAJA.
